Panopticon of the Mind

This is a film about creativity.

Inspired by the early 20th century experimental cinema of Maya Deren, Dziga Vertov and Man Ray (to name but a few), this film explores the torment and isolation of creative block. The film uses a variety of techniques including a 1.37:1 aspect ratio (to represent the feeling of being boxed in), superimposition (to represent the protagonists fractured mind) and cyclical shots (to represent the seemingly unending monotony of creative block). All of these techniques are used to enter the mind of the protagonist and visually represent his internal creative block. The film’s setting transitions halfway through from close confined indoor spaces into picturesque landscape shots representing the character overcoming his creative block. The final shot of the scene sees the protagonist walk across the screen from right to left, returning to his creative block and demonstrating the cyclical nature of the subject.
